Hite Chair Scholar Lecture Series

The SRF Hite Chair Scholar Lecture Series seeks to inform and promote interest in issues of academic freedom and political liberties. The series appoints SRF visiting academic fellows to engage in school-wide lectures, panel discussions and course-related seminars to share the personal experience of a threatened scholar and to educate university and high school audiences on global human rights issues around the world.

The Hite Chair Scholar Lecture Series is made possible by the generous support of the Hite Foundation Chair for Communications of the Scholar Rescue Fund.  If you are interested in welcoming a Hite Chair Scholar for a lecture on your campus, please contact us at SRF@iie.org or 212-205-6486.

Newark Academy Lecture Series Event

Press Release

January 28, 2010
The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) Scholar Speaker Series Event

The SRF Hite Foundation Chair Scholar Speaker Series seeks to inform and promote interest in issues of academic freedom and political liberties among undergraduate and graduate university students, civic society organizations, and secondary school audiences.

On January 25, an SRF rescued scholar from Zimbabwe Professor Eric Shumba spoke to a group of 600 middle and high school students and faculty at Newark Academy as part of the school’s acclaimed Global Speaker Series. Following his presentation, Professor Shumba visited several classrooms to continue the dialogue on human rights and academic freedom.

The event received rave reviews from both students and faculty for promoting relations between cultures and countries by engaging a rescued scholar with a diverse group of young students and future leaders on issues of human rights, academic freedom, and global affairs. An audience member remarked, “I am in awe of this individual and the program that saved his life. Hearing the scholar speak about his experiences in Zimbabwe has left me both traumatized and humbled.”

The Scholar Rescue Fund would like to thank the administration, faculty and students at Newark Academy for making this event possible.  Special recognition goes out to the Newark Academy Global Speaker Series coordinator Mr. Derek Kanerek and the Newark Academy SRF student coordinator Jacob Zack for facilitating this event.

Several photos from the event capturing Professor Shumba during his lecture and in the classroom document the impact of his visit:
