Her life began to turn around when she received a fellowship from the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund — which helps academics whose lives are in danger.
The crisis in Syria has created an academic emergency, with the breakdown of higher education within the country and major obstacles facing Syrian scholars and students.
Allan E Goodman, president and CEO of the IIE, said: "Syria needs students to continue their university education and scholars to continue their academic work so that, even in the midst of crisis, the country is producing the leadership and knowledge necessary for a successful future.
The Institute of International Education announced on Tuesday at the Clinton Global Initiative here that it would lead an effort to provide emergency support to Syrian scholars and students.
