Announcing the IIE-SRF Dialogues Webinar Series

By IIE-SRF staff

The need for scholar rescue is greater today than ever before. Thousands of academics each year experience the impacts of conflict and war on their lives and scholarly work. Others face targeted threats and repression due to their research or identities. These realities are reflected in IIE-SRF’s daily work: In every year since 2017, we have received a record number of requests for support from threatened and displaced scholars across the globe.

IIE-SRF is pleased to announce the launch of IIE-SRF Dialogues, a new webinar series that will explore the threats facing academics globally as well as the ongoing efforts to help these scholars resume their work and rebuild their lives and careers. These hour-long discussions, which will be held monthly via Zoom, will feature IIE-SRF fellows and alumni, IIE-SRF partners, and other experts discussing the world’s most urgent higher education emergencies, key topics related to academic freedom, and best practices in assisting threatened and displaced scholars as identified by IIE-SRF and our Alliance partners. Participants attending each webinar will have the opportunity to ask questions of panelists during a Q&A session.

IIE’s Longstanding Partnership with Vanderbilt University in Support of Threatened Scholars

By Ann Marie Deer Owens

This article highlights IIE’s decades-long partnership with Vanderbilt University in support of threatened and displaced scholars from around the world. Vanderbilt is among just 45 higher education institutions that have worked with IIE through both IIE’s Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars, which from 1933-1945 offered temporary academic homes at U.S. colleges and universities to more than 300 European scholars facing Nazi persecution, and the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund, which has built upon the legacy of the Emergency Committee and other IIE programs to support nearly 900 scholars from 60 countries in partnership with over 400 host institutions in 47 countries.

The article also features Dr. Issam Eido (pictured; photo credit: Vanderbilt University), an expert on Islam and Muslim intellectual history who undertook IIE-SRF fellowships at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Dr. Eido now holds a permanent position in Vanderbilt’s Department of Religious Studies.

IIE-SRF joins partnership in support of displaced scientists

By The World Academy of Sciences

IIE-SRF is honored to be part of a new partnership initiative that brings together institutions working in support of refugee and displaced scientists! Through the initiative, institutions, academies, NGOs, and government agencies worldwide will join forces to help threatened and displaced scientists preserve their professional skills and ease their integration into their new environments.

The project was launched in October 2020 at a virtual event hosted by The World Academy of Sciences, the InterAcademy Partnership, and the International Science Council. During the workshop, IIE-SRF Director James Robin King stressed the urgent needs faced by a growing number of scientists worldwide who have faced threats to their lives and careers. “It is incumbent upon us to support our colleagues to reach safety and be able to pursue their scholarly work in security,” James said. “We must never lose sight of these scientists’ skills, expertise, and unique experiences, which they bring to their home academies, host countries, and to the global scientific community. This is why IIE-SRF is ready to join with TWAS, UNESCO, and other partners to find solutions to this global crisis for science.”

By IIE-SRF staff

IIE-SRF is delighted to announce the establishment of the IIE-SRF Emmy Noether Chair, made possible by a gift from the Amy Falls and Hartley Rogers Foundation. The Chair – named in honor of the prominent mathematician who was assisted by IIE’s Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars after fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933 – will support annually and in perpetuity an outstanding woman scholar who, like Noether, has overcome significant barriers to pursue her scholarly work. “The IIE-SRF Emmy Noether Chair will ensure that women scholars around the world will have the lifelines that they need and the platforms that they deserve to pursue their academic work in safety and security,” says IIE-SRF Chairman Mark Angelson. “We couldn’t be more grateful to Amy and Hartley for this generous gift.”
