Meet the Sheffield Scientists behind the Desert Garden appeal

By University of Sheffield staff
IIE-SRF alumnus Moaed Al Meselmani is leading an innovative project at the University of Sheffield Institute for Sustainable Food in the UK. He and his colleagues launched the Desert Garden project to help farmers displaced from Syria to continue growing their crops in refugee camps – with the aid of discarded mattresses! This approach – which has enabled crops to grow and flourish in dry climates such as the Jordanian desert – requires less water and fertilizer than are required with traditional farming methods. In a recent interview, Dr. Al Meselmani explained, "The Desert Garden project gives people the tools and skills they need to grow their own fresh produce and gain future employment, as well as boosting their mental health – it connects people with home and gives them hope for the future." Dr. Al Meselmani is currently a visiting researcher at Sheffield, where he also undertook IIE-SRF fellowships from 2015 to 2017.
