The Institute of International Education is campaigning to raise $5 million to aid Syrian students and academics.

The Scholar Rescue Fund’s philosophy is to provide short-term fellowships to threatened scholars so they may return to their home countries to help rebuild universities and societies when conditions improve.

Responding to the worsening situation in Syria, Institute of International Education (IIE) President and CEO Allan Goodman recently announced that a global consortium of higher education institutions and organisations had pledged an additional US$1.3 million in emergency support for threatened Syrian scholars and students.

The crisis in Syria has created an academic emergency, with the breakdown of higher education within the country and major obstacles facing Syrian scholars and students.

Allan E Goodman, president and CEO of the IIE, said: "Syria needs students to continue their university education and scholars to continue their academic work so that, even in the midst of crisis, the country is producing the leadership and knowledge necessary for a successful future.

The Institute of International Education announced on Tuesday at the Clinton Global Initiative here that it would lead an effort to provide emergency support to Syrian scholars and students.
