Northeastern Scholar, Liberian Land Rights Lawyer, Awarded Biden Chair Appointment

Brownell has been creating a land security index that ranks how well governments are protecting land rights for their citizens. He recently received an award that will ensure his safety, protect his legal work in perpetuity, and help him continue that work. The chair was created in 2016 to honor the legacy of Beau Biden, the former attorney general of Delaware.

Urgent need for joined-up support for threatened and displaced scientists worldwide

There is a growing recognition of the need for the international scientific community to address the number of threatened, displaced and refugee scientists worldwide, according to a special session organized by the International Science Council (ISC), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) at the 2018 World Social Science Forum in Fukuoka, Japan.

Carleton to Host “Dangerous Scholars” Panel Featuring IIE-SRF Fellows

On September 19th, Carleton University will host a welcome event to honor two scholars, Mustafa Bahran and Rahim Surkhi. The professors are part of the Scholars at Risk program and their appointments were arranged in partnership with IIE-SRF. The scholars will participate in a panel, "Dangerous Scholars," and will discuss their perilous journeys to Carleton and their academic backgrounds. The panel will be moderated by Emily Borzcik, senior program officer of IIE-SRF.

Alumnus Azat Gundogan Joins Newly Enhanced Honors Program at FSU

Florida State University is implementing some important changes to enhance the Honors Program this fall. The program has named a new director and hired three new specialized honors faculty members, including IIE-SRF alumnus Azat Gundogan, a scholar of sociology from Turkey.

New Beginning for a Yemeni Scholar in Norway

After two years of waiting and expectation, Eqbal Dauqan, a Yemeni biochemist who has won international honors, has received a new opportunity to work and continue her research at the University of Agder in Norway. Late in 2015, Dauqan was awarded a scholarship sponsored by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to work in a Malaysian university for a year.

The New University in Exile Consortium: September 6th

The New University in Exile Consortium is an initiative emerging from The New School’s past as the home of the first University in Exile in 1933. The Consortium is committed to the view that the academic community has both the responsibility and capacity to assist scholars in need, by helping to protect the intellectual capital that is jeopardized when universities and scholars are under assault. The launch took place on September 6th in New York City.

How Should Higher Education Be Responding to Refugee and Migrant Crises?

The gathering of roughly 120 academics and nonprofit officials kicked off a new Rutgers-based consortium called the University Alliance for Refugees and At-Risk Migrants. Its goal: to coordinate and scale up the patchwork of university programs assisting displaced people. Participants also want to change the narrative about those people at a moment of rising nationalism and xenophobia.

University Alliance for Refugees and At-Risk Migrants Launches at Rutgers University

On July 23rd, Rutgers University hosted the launch of the University Alliance for Refugees and At-Risk Migrants (UARRM). This event convened refugees, at-risk migrants, faculty and scholars, student associations, education think tanks, legislators, local government, ecumenical education institutions, United Nations agencies, and other representatives of the international community. IIE-SRF is honored to be a part of UARRM’s Steering Committee. IIE-SRF Director Sarah Willcox presented on barriers to higher education for refugees and at-risk migrants. An ‘Unprecedented’ Exodus of Scholars

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) released the latest edition of their quarterly newsletter, which focuses on the ever-growing issue of displaced scientists. For the newsletter, IIE-SRF Assistant Director James King authored “An ‘Unprecedented’ Exodus of Scholars,” elaborating on the effects of war and authoritarianism on researchers, particularly in the Global South.
