PA#USE applications open through September 25

IIE-SRF is pleased to share application information for our partners at PAUSE (Programme national d’aide à l’Accueil en Urgence des Scientifiques en Exil), a French national program that supports Ph.D. candidates, post-doc researchers, and displaced researchers and scientists seeking to work in safety. The program allocates incentive funding to public higher education and research establishments that can host scientist at their institutions in France. AAAS Higher Education and Human Rights Symposium: July 12-13

American Association for the Advancement of Science

On July 12-13, AAAS will convene a symposium on higher education and human rights at their headquarters. Speakers, including IIE-SRF fellow Mustafa Bahran of Yemen, will address issues many academic institutions are now tackling: protecting scientific and academic freedom on globally connected campuses. IIE-SRF has released our quarterly call for applications from qualified scholars facing threats to their lives or careers. Supporting displaced scholars through the At-Risk & Refugee Scholar Membership Initiative

The Global Young Academy (GYA) published an overview of their recent activities working with at-risk and refugee scholars in GYA Connections. GYA's peer mentorship program connects these scholars with their counterparts in other countries in partnership with IIE-SRF, The World Academy of Sciences, Scholars At Risk, and other organizations.

Fellow Melissa Bilal of Turkey Co-Chairs Feminism & Armenian Studies Conference

Armenian Weekly describes the April 7th conference “Feminist Interventions in Armenian Studies/Armenian Interventions in Feminist Studies” at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), co-chaired by IIE-SRF Fellow Melissa Bilal. An ethnomusicologist and historian from Turkey, Dr. Bilal joined a group of women scholars from the US, Canada, the UK, and Armenia to discuss the intersection of feminism and Armenian history. The Dilenschneider Award sponsored the conference in conjunction with MIT and others.

IIE Hosts Education under Attack 2018 on May 10, 2018

The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) and the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Norway, and Qatar to the United Nations launched “Education under Attack 2018: A Global Study of Attacks on Schools and Universities and their Students and Staff, 2013-2017″ on May 10, 2018 at IIE’s NYC headquarters. The report shows that attacks on education have worsened in the last five years, becoming more widespread and increasing in some countries. In addition to a panel of high level speakers, the event included a presentation of the findings from Education under Attack 2018 as well as GCPEA’s recent research on the impact of attacks on education on girls and women in Nigeria.

To conclude Connecticut College's Founder's Day ceremony, Binalakshmi Nepram, the college’s Rescue Scholar-in-Residence, spoke about the work she has done as a human rights and disarmament activist in her home country of India, and how vital exposure to global education is for the next generation of peace advocates.
